"The Texas Ruby Red Grapefruit, kissed by the warm southern sun, whispers tales of the rich Rio Grande Valley, an embodiment of Texan pride and joy."
Savoring the Texas Sunshine
To crack open a Texas Ruby Red Grapefruit is to bathe in a Texan sunrise. Its rapturous ruby-red hue holds a ballet of sweetness and a zingy tart. Luscious with the nectar of the Texan sun, the Ruby Red offers a tender, juicy bite, of the Lone Star State.
From the Valley to the Table
The grapefruit made its debut in Texas around the 1820s. It was introduced by Spanish missionaries who planted citrus seeds, including oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, in the fertile Rio Grande Valley. The subtropical climate of the Rio Grande Valley provided an ideal environment for grapefruit cultivation, leading to an increase in grapefruit orchards. Early grapefruit varieties grown in Texas were mainly whites and pinks. The Texas Ruby Red dates to the early 20th century, a chance mutation unveiled this beautiful blush-hued gem, instantly capturing the hearts of citrus lovers. In 1929, the Texas citrus industry began to intentionally develop red grapefruit varieties. The first official “Ruby Red” grapefruit was produced through controlled irradiation in 1970. The sweeter, ruby-red variety appealed to consumers, driving up demand and making grapefruit one of the leading crops in Texas’s Rio Grande Valley. In 1993, the Texas Ruby Red Grapefruit was designated the official state fruit of Texas, cementing its place in the state’s agricultural and cultural history.
